Film Evening on Pastoralism in Trenta

On Wednesday, 22 July 2026, a film evening dedicated to pastoralism, life and wildlife in the mountains took place in front of Dom Trenta. The audience watched Images from Trenta Valley by Naško Križnar and My Summer Holiday by Petra Seliškar. The first film offers a valuable record of sheep farming and everyday life in Trenta in the 1980s, while the second follows present-day young shepherds who spend their summers high in the Macedonian mountain pastures.

Both filmmakers attended the event. Before the screenings, they presented the circumstances and processes behind the making of their films, discussed their respective creative approaches and reflected on different ways of documenting life and cultural practices. They also outlined the differences between visual anthropology and auteur documentary filmmaking.

Before the film evening, two practical workshops were held on wool felting and safe grazing. They were led by staff from the Institute of Agriculture and Forestry Nova Gorica as part of the Woolshed project, and by the Slovenia Forest Service as part of the LIFE Varna paša project. Together with the host, the Triglav National Park Public Institute, Kinoatelje and ZRC SAZU—through the Wildlife in Border Regions project and the Heritage on the Margins programme—these institutions were among the co-organisers of the evening.

The event was exceptionally well attended, attracting more than one hundred people—and, in the spirit of the second film, in which sheepdogs play an important role, three dogs as well! Both films were met with enthusiastic applause. Residents responded particularly emotionally to Images from Trenta, as they recognised ancestors, relatives and familiar faces from the valley on the screen.
