Symposium: The Prekmurje Scholar Avgust Pavel – Pavel Day 2026

On 8 September 2026, the symposium The Prekmurje Scholar Avgust Pavel – Pavel Day 2026 took place in Cankova, Prekmurje. Dr Tjaša Jakop, from the Fran Ramovš Institute of the Slovenian Language at ZRC SAZU, participated in the event, delivering a lecture entitled “Pavel’s Phonology as a Valuable Source for Monitoring Dialect Change”.

Dr Jakop’s academic engagement with the linguistic work of Avgust Pavel—who was born in Cankova on 28 August 1886—began during her undergraduate studies, when she translated the greater part of his phonological treatise from Hungarian into Slovenian. The symposium concluded with the opening of an exhibition dedicated to Avgust Pavel and Jožef Borovnjak, alongside a recital of Pavel’s poetry held at the newly restored Pavel homestead. Today, the birthplace of Avgust Pavel in Cankova serves as a vital site for the preservation of cultural heritage, whilst simultaneously functioning as a vibrant social and cultural hub for both locals and visitors. The restored house does not merely commemorate one of Prekmurje’s most prominent intellectuals; it is designed as an open venue for community gathering, artistic creation, and social integration.
