Broadcast About the Dual Number
In the informational broadcast Jezikanje on Radio Val 202, linguist Dr. Tjaša Jakop from the Fran Ramovš Institute of the Slovenian Language ZRC SAZU explained some interesting facts about the typical Slovene grammatical category: the dual. Today, among the official languages of the European Union, Slovene is the only one that preserves the dual in all inflectional word types. She was asked the following questions: Could Slovene exist without the dual? Where does the dual come from in our language and why has it been preserved? Which languages in the world still use it? Are there also languages with a trial number?
The broadcast was also highlighted on the ZRC SAZU Facebook page, which noted: "It is interesting that the dual is not preserved in the same way everywhere in Slovenia: in the Prekmurje dialect, it is very consistent, while in some Primorje dialects, it has almost disappeared. Nevertheless, it remains one of the most recognizable features of the Slovenian language—not only a grammatical peculiarity, but also a way of expressing closeness, connection, and intimacy."
