Doctoral Dissertation Defence of Miha Sušnik
On Friday, 26 September 2025, Miha Sušnik, a member of the research programme Heritage on the Margins, successfully defended his doctoral dissertation in the field of historical linguistics, titled Slovenian Non-Neuter Nouns with the Plural Ending -a in the Indo-European Context at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Ljubljana. In his dissertation, he connected Slovenian dialectal plural forms of the type pota ‘paths’, kamna ‘stones’, lonca ‘pots’, njiva ‘fields’, hiša ‘houses’, laza ‘glades’, kokoša ‘hens’, etc., with similar formations in other Slavic languages. He identified these as reflecting an archaic Slavic phenomenon, which may also be genetically related to similar forms in ancient Indo-European languages, such as Latin loca ‘places’ or Ancient Greek kúkla ‘wheels’.
