Borderless! Nova Gorica and Gorizia – European Capital of Culture 2025

At the end of last week, we were hugely excited to hear the news that Nova Gorica will hold the title European Capital of Culture (ECoC) in 2025! The European Capitals of Culture, the Heritage Days or the European Heritage Label are meant to build interpretations of local and national heritage as a constitutive element of shared European heritage and an important tool for European integration (Delanty 2017; Clopot 2020). The consideration of ‘European dimension’ is exposed in the bid book: “Where are you, Europe? Up left  with John Wayne riding free in the sunset? Bottom right in the land of iron curtains and barbed- wire fences? Stuck in the middle? And where is your real dimension drawn?”. As part of ECoC, the Heriscope team looks forward to collaborating on the design and implementation of the brotherly Episcope, where we will join other colleagues from ZRC SAZU in looking at the past, present and future of the layered Nova Gorica/Gorizia palimpsest.
