Cruise Ships and the Urban Everyday in the Northern Adriatic: A Lecture by Janine Schemmer

Janine Schemmer, a cultural anthropologist from the University of Vienna and guest of the Heritage on the Margins program within the Development Funding Scheme at ZRC SAZU from 1 to 30 November, delivered a lecture on 12 November 2025 in the Seminar of the Institute of Slovenian Ethnology titled Cruise ships and the urban everyday – examining social polarisation in the Northern Adriatic. In her presentation, the anthropologist—whose research focuses on memory culture, critical heritage studies, narrative research, spatial processes and social relations, mobilities and transnational practices, and material culture —introduced her study on the impact of cruise ships on the social and spatial dynamics of Northern Adriatic port cities.
