Martina Bofulin a keynote speaker at the PAGODE semantic workshop
Martina Bofulin was invited to give a keynote presentation at the online semantic workshop organized by the Department for Asian Studies at the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana within the framework of the PAGODE project. The aim of the workshop with speakers from Italy, Greece, the Netherlands, Belgium, Serbia, and Slovenia was to create a common basis for the curation of Chinese cultural heritage in the Europeana Digital Library. The first day of the conference (9 July 2020) focused on different aspects of Chinese cultural heritage, while the second day (20 July 2020) discussed the methods of curation of metadata on the content related to China in Europeana. The PAGODE project supports cultural heritage institutions in aggregating, curating, and presenting Chinese cultural heritage present in Europe, and aims to improve user experience and audience engagement with Chinese heritage in Europe as found in Europeana’s digital library.
Martina keynote speech titled Heritage from the Margins: Discovering the Legacies of Chinese Migration highlighted the heritagization of migration occurring both at the place of origin and at places of settlement. The lecture, which focused on Chinese migrants, explored different approaches to heritage and, in particular, the different objectives pursued by heritagization. These depend on the economic and political context of the place of heritagization. The lecture also stressed the lack of work in establishing connections or corridors as a way of transcending the national in heritagization. More on this in Martina’s short blog post published on the PAGODE website.
